OBITUARY

THE CHARITON HERALD
Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, May 2, 1889

FOULKS - James Foulks was born near Cadiz, Ohio, May 24th, 1822, and died at his home in Lucas county, Ia., April 27, 1889.

Brother Foulks' death was very sudden. He had, just a few minutes before his son's departure, actively stepped out to a gate a few rods from the house to open it, as his son was starting to Chariton. He then went into the house and lay down on the sofa.

In a few minutes one of his sons, being in the same room heard him moan, and on observing him he saw that there was a deathly appearance in his face, and went to him at once. He only breathed a few times and passed away, not being able to speak in his last moments.

The writer visited him and his family a few weeks previous to his death and found him much concerned about his son who had been unwell for some time. Brother Foulks at this time was very sweet spirited, his heart very tender and leaning hard on God's word and its promises as I had never seen him before.

Brother Foulks removed from the place of his birth with his father and family to Richland county, Ohio, in 1831, and soon after his father died, leaving him at the age of nine years.

He was married Sept. 22, 1845 to Sarah J. Reed, who departed this life June 13, 1882. Soon after this marriage they both united with the Baptist church. In 1855 they removed to Lucas county, Iowa, and not finding the church of their choice here, they both united with the M. E. church, with which they remained until death.

On November 17, 1887, he was again united in marriage to Miss Anna Freeman, who survives him. He leaves seven sons and one daughter, Mrs. Wm. A. Lee, all of whom were present at his funeral, two of his daughters dying several years ago.

He has been a resident of English township for the last 34 years, and at the time of his death was near 67 years old. During his entire life he was always a strong advocate for the right, and possessed strong qualities for truth and integrity and the love and respect with which his children and family ever held for him will never be equaled except by that which they retain for their mother.

The funeral services were conducted by the writer at the home of the departed, after which a very large procession of sympathizing friends and neighbors followed his remains to the Chariton cemetery, where his body was interred by the side of his companion gone before. He was buried by the order of the Free Masons.
