TAPS SOUNDED FOR VETERAN
Perry Anderson Took Part in Fights at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge
RESIDENT SINCE 1879

Tipton County lost another of her civil war veterans Friday afternoon when Perry Anderson, 90, of Tetersburg succumbed to infirmities of age at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dora Beatty, in Kokomo where he had been making his home for the past 18 months, having left his home in Tetersburg.

Funeral services are to be held at the Tetersburg church Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock with Rev. John Cunningham of Alexandrea in charge and burial will be in the Tetersburg cemetery.

Perry Anderson served more than 3 years with the Union forces during the civil war, having enlisted in Shelby County in 1862 and was mustered out in 1865. He was a member of Company E, 79th Indiana Volunteers, and was in many engagements and skirmishes and in the battles of Stone River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Nashville and others. He came through without being wounded, except a slight injury on his left arm at Chickamauga, when a spent ball struck him.

The deceased was born in Bartholomew County, January 3, 1843, being one of four children born to William and Rebecca (Conner) Anderson, who removed from Bartholomew County to Shelby County where the mother died in 1868. The father was remarried and eight children were born to the second union. Perry Anderson was the last survivor of all of the children.

The deceased in 1867 was united in marriage to Miss Mary Henry in Shelby County and her death occurred August 5, 1910 at Tetersburg, she being buried in the Tetersburg cemetery. Following their marriage they resided in Shelby County, later removing back to Bartholomew County, then to Putnam, Johnson and Montgomery Counties residing in each other for a short time. Early in the year 1879 they came to Tipton County, locating on a farm near Tetersburg.

Perry Anderson was a man who had many friends here. He was an interesting person to talk with in his latter years, having a vivid first-hand knowledge of events connected with the civil war and could relate many interesting happenings, not found in the histories of that conflict.

His passing removes that last surviving veteran from Jefferson Township and recalls forcibly that veterans of the civil war are fast passing, there being less than one dozen in the county.

Mr. Anderson is survived by four [five] children: Mrs. Dora Beatty, Mrs. Eva Thurston, and Lewis and Frank Anderson, all of Kokomo, and Mrs. Lydia Ward of Frankfort. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. One of his prized possessions was a photograph taken two years ago, showing him with four generations of descendants which was taken at the Beatty home in Kokomo. In the picture are Mr. Anderson, his daughter, Mrs. Dora Beatty; Mrs. Beatty's daughter, Mrs. Pearl Simmerman; Mrs. Simmerman's son, Harry F. Simmerman, and the latter's son, Harry Junior.

Perry Anderson was a longtime member of the Tetersburg Christian Church and was one of the members of the James Price post G.A.R. of Tipton, which no longer exists, there not being enough veterans in the county to maintain the charter.
