As a businessman, he was much involved in the railroad business and its development in Wisconsin. George was president of the Wisconsin Central Railroad that connects Lake Superior with Milwaukee. He was known as the "Father" of the Wisconsin Central.
He is a brother to Curtis Reed, credited with the founding of Menasha, Wisconsin and Harrison Reed, former Governor of Florida. A nephew was Billy Mitchell, the person that Mitchell Field Airport in Milwaukee is named after.

George Reed perished on January 10, 1883 in the Newhall House Hotel fire In downtown Milwaukee. The obelisk at Forest Home Cemetery is a memorial to the victims of the fire. George Reed's name is inscribed on one of the tablets at the base of the monument.
