James had a hard life. He was born in Salina, Kankakee, IL to Garrett H. Fitzgerald and Eliza Barry.
James had two step-sisters: Abby LaVerna, and Mary Frances, from Garrett's first marriage to Emily Vining in 1853,IL. Emily died giving birth to Mary Frances in 1856 or shortly after. Garrett married Eliza Barry, James' mother, 1859, IL. Garrett died early in 1871, Ft. Wallace, KS. when James was 7 years of age. Eliza was 4 1/2 mo. pregnant with their last child Josephine born 5-18-1872. James lived with his Mother 1872-1874 and Abby and Mary Frances went to live with Garrett's sister, Mary Josephine Fitzgerald-Barry in Wallace, KS. Eliza married Thomas Seery in 1874. James, and siblings: Dennis, Emily, Josephine are in the 1880 Census with Eliza & Mr. Seery as step-children:James 16 yrs of age. Eliza died after 6-19-1880 Census and before Thomas' marriage to Hannah Daylor 12-25-1888.
He was 18 yrs when he married Clara Bird in 1882. The other three siblings are recorded together in the Kansas 1885 Census. Clara eventually lived with one of her children, Maxine Allsup in Lee's Summit, MO and died there. She is buried beside him in Manhattan, Riley, KS., Sunset Cemetery.
He was a Carpenter and did the Woodwork inside Riley County Courthouse on Poyntz Ave in Manhattan, Riley, KS. His family lived in Manhattan, Riley, KS for 52 years. He was in the Spanish American War, "Co M22nd Reg of Ks. Articifer" 7 mo. He and his siblings dedicated one of the first stained glass windows in St. Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan, KS to his father, Garrett H. and Mother Eliza.
He died of heart failure and is buried at the Sunset Cemetery with wife, Clara,she was b.1882, Cherryvale, Montgomery, KS., d. 1976, K. City, MO. She was a teacher.
