Betty M. Sabatino, 78, of Meiers Corners, Staten Island, NY, a U.S. Air Force corporal, who was one of the first female air traffic controllers to land Sabre jets, died Sunday, January 18, 2009, in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born Betty Reese in Rantoul, WI, she was reared in New Holstein, WI.
Mrs. Sabatino lived in Brooklyn before moving to Meiers Corners in 1973.
A graduate of New Holstein High School, she worked in the purchasing office of the College of Staten Island for 15 years, retiring in 1998.
Her leisure-time pursuits included singing, reading, gardening, and cooking. She was well known for making authentic German and Italian dishes, as well as being an excellent baker.
"She was the best," said her daughter, Elizabeth Sabatino. "I was very lucky to have her as a mother and friend. I will always love and miss her."
Mrs. Sabatino served as a corporal in the Air Force from 1949 to 1952, during the Korean War.
Her husband of 52 years, Thomas E., died in 2003.
In addition to her daughter, Elizabeth, surviving is a brother, Martin Reese, of Kiel, WI.
Arrangements for a private funeral and cremation were handled by the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, Staten Island, NY.
