He was born on February 25, 1925, in Albemarle County, a son of the late Earl Patterson and Mary Woodson Patterson.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one stepson, Daniel W. Quick and his wife, Linda, of Stuarts Draft, Virginia; and a son, Robert Patterson and his wife, Kay, of Waynesboro,Virginia; one brother, Roger Patterson and his wife, Patricia, of Crozet; three sisters, Dorothy Juanita Jones and her husband Jim of Stuarts Draft, Grace Morris of Ruckersville, Virginia, and Mary Catherine Coffey and her husband, Paul, of Afton, Virginia; seven step-grand-children, 12 step great-grand-children, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Wood Patterson; three brothers, Stanley Patterson, J. D. Patterson and Carlton Patterson; a sister, Barbara Ann Abrahamsen; a stepson, Thomas E. Quick; and a special grandson, Carlton Patterson.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing on the James River. He was retired from Dupont after 36 years and was a part-time farmer. He was a member of the Fisherman's/Hunt Club and VFW of Crozet and was in the Navy in World War II.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Hillsboro Baptist Church with Dr. Alan Thompson officiating.
