FINAL RITES HELD FOR FOUNDER OF BLOOMINGTON STAR
Funeral services for Harry J. Feltus, secretary-treasurer and mechanical superintendent of The Star-Courier, were conducted Thursday afternoon at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. A. Elliston Cole officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Death came to the senior member of the Feltus firm only a few days after the company marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of The Bloomington Courier.
In ill health for more than a year, Mr. Feltus died Monday at the Parrott Nursing Home. He had been at the nursing home a week previously after two months at the Bloomington Hospital. He was 77 years old last October 15.
He was born in Greencastle, Ind., the son of the late Henry J. Feltus and Catherine Ella Feltus. He came to Bloomington as a child.
A pioneer in the Bloomington printing and newspaper field, Mr. Feltus followed in the footsteps of his father. In his youth he was associated with his father in the publication of The Bloomington Courier.
It was in 1895 that he founded The Bloomington Star, after The Courier had been sold to the Cravens Brothers. He continued to operate the firm until 1920 when the company was reorganized as the Feltus Printing Company, Inc., with Paul L. Feltus, his younger brother, as president and general manager. Harry Feltus became secretary-treasurer and mechanical superintendent of the new organization.
In the early 1900's, Harry Feltus joined the parade of local persons who were engaged in show business for a time. He traveled with the Robert H. Harris dramatic company for several years. Later he worked as a printer and make-up man for the old Kokomo Dispatch and later the Indianapolis Star and I. U. printing plant.
He was a verteran of the Spanish American War and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Surviving Mr. Feltus are three brothers, Paul and Roy, of Bloomington; John, of Lexington, Ky.; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Romiser, of Bloomington, and five nieces, Mrs. Dorothy K. Moore, Paula Feltus, Mrs. Donald Walstrum, Mrs. Robert Preston and Mrs. George Leinenweber.
