ROBERT ATWELL
Robert Atwell, former Mount Vernon resident who worked as a printer on the old weekly Chronicle here more than 60 years ago, died yesterday in Green Village,N. J.
He was a brother of former Police Chief George Atwell and Henry Atwell of Mount Vernon.
Mr. Atwell was born in 1856 in Philadelphia and came to Mount Vernon to live with his parents when he was two years of age. He received his public school education in one of Mount Vernon's first school buildings, which stood on
the site where the School Administration Building now is located. In his youth he became a "printer's devil" for a printer on Fourth Avenue, later going to work for the weekly Chronicle when David Brown was its editor. He also worked on New York newspapers as a printer for a number of years.
Mr. Atwell moved to New Jersey about 30 years ago but was a frequent visitor in Mount Vernon. He was employed by the Public Service Corporation of New Jersey until three years ago, and was a member of Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges.
Surviving besides his two brothers is a sister, Mrs. Harry Havens of Springfield, Mass. Mr. Atwell's wife died several years ago.
