Suffering she had endured for several weeks without hardly a murmur, ended at 3 o'clock this morning; when Mrs. Eliza J. Goffe, 54 years old, died in her home at 3 East Third
street. She became ill eight weeks previously as the result of a cancer. Her condition was such that an operation was useless.
Before her marriage about 25 years ago to Walter E. Goffe, she was Miss Eliza J. Atwsll. Her husband suddenly disappeared about five years subsequently, leaving her and their two children- a boy and a girl—to face the world alone. He has not been heard from since. The mother went to work and brought up the children in a most admirable manner and it was with pride that she saw them develop into ideal types of man and woman.
Until about eight weeks ago she was employed at Howard's. Then she became too ill to continue her employment. For a long time she was engaged at Genung's store. Besides her husband, whose whereabouts is unknown, and her daughter, Mrs. Charles Derry, of 121 South Twelfth avenue, and son, Archibald Goffe, of 3 East Third street, the deceased leaves three brothers, Acting Chief of Police George Atwell and Henry Atwell, of this city; Robert, of Bloomfleld, NJ., a stepbrother, James Walker, of Phlladelpia. Pa., and one sister, Mrs. Harry Havens, of Springfield, Mass.
The deceased was a daughter of the late George and Eliza Atwell, of this city, and was born here. The funeral services will be conducted at 8 o'clock Wednesday evening by the Rev. J. H. Holllster and interment will be in Woodlawn.
