"SHERIFF HAKE KILLED
Sheriff E. C. Hake of this county, whose home has been at Hartville, since the last November election, was kicked in the head last Friday afternoon about 2 pm by a horse and died two hours later from the effects of the injury. The sheriff was on the street in Hartville and he in company of other men was looking at the horse with a view to purchasing same. He was standing with his back toward the animal and just as he started to turn the horse gave a vicious kick, striking Mr. Hake in the face, which caved his face in breaking many bones. The sheriff fell to the ground and was carried to a building for treatment, but he never gained consciousness and died two hours later.
Mr. Hake was elected sheriff of Wright County last November and took his office the first of the year. He leaves a wife and children. It is said the longest funeral procession ever in Hartville paid their last respects to the body of the dead sheriff. Mr. Hake had been a prosperous farmer on the Gasconade River before being elected to the office of sheriff."
