Jefferson was the son of Samuel and Keziah (Bosley) Black from Pennsylvania. In 1850 he was living in York, Livingston Co., in the household of William Markham likely working as a farm hand. Markham's daughter Julia became Jefferson's bride probably later that year. Jefferson kept farming on his own and the couple had three children.
