Funeral Services this afternoon at 3:30 Bishop Thomas and the Rector will officiate
Walter Hazard died suddenly at his home on Highmarket Street early Thursday morning.
He was a distinguished member of the South Carolina Bar President of the Historic Winyah Indigo Society former State Senator editor of the old Georgetown Enquirer president of the local bar association and a member of the Standing and Executive Committees of the South Carolina Diocese.
Mr Hazard was born in Georgetown December 25th 1859 and as a boy attended school conducted by A McP Hamby. In 1877 he was graduated from Princeton University and in 1880 received his MA degree from that institution. He studied law under Richard Dozier well known lawyer of his time and in 1881 was admitted to the bar. His record as a lawyer of the state bar was an enviable one his brilliant work in his chosen profession being recognized beyond the confines of his native state. A member of the Church of Prince George Winyah and the councils of the church he was an authority on Canon law and for many years represented Prince George at the Diocesan conventions. He had the distinction of representing the diocese at the last three general conventions.
Mr Hazard was a member of the House of Representatives in 1882 1888 and 1890 and in 1892 was elected state senator. In 1880 he founded the Georgetown Enquirer and was editor of that paper for a number of years. He was first elected president of the Winyah Indigo Society in 1893.
As South Carolina's orator at the Jamestown Exposition he able represented the Palmetto State delivering a brilliant address before a large audience composed of people from all parts of the United States.
Mr Hazard was married twice first to Miss Jessie Tamplet who died in 1889 and in later years to Miss Florence Tamplet. He is survived by two daughters Miss Paula E Hazard and Miss Minnie T Hazard both of Georgetown two brothers Schuyler Hazard of Ablion NY and JI Hazard of this city and two sisters Mrs Ruth Hazard James and Mrs Hattie Hazard Wilson both of Richmond Va.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Church of Prince George Winyah at 3:30 Friday afternoon with the Right Rev Albert S Thomas Bishop of South Carolina presiding assisted by the Rev HD Bull rector.
