Phillip enlisted in the US Marines 15 February 1968, at a recruiting office in Los Angeles.
Phillip arrived in Vietnam 2 February 1969 and was assigned to 2nd Platoon of 1st Searchlight Battery, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. At approximately 0200H a group of hostile forces attacked the CAP compound and the nearby village. Phillip died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body from a hostile grenade during a sapper attack on the CAP 4-1-4 compound. The Marines lost 5 men and 1 US Navy man.
