TEXICO LAD KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT
Funeral services are being conducted this (Wednesday) afternoon at the local Church of Christ for Elton Young, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Young, with Minister Ebb Randol in charge. Burial will take place in the Texico cemetery, with the Steed Funeral Home in charge.
Young was instantly killed at an early hour last Sunday morning when the car in which he was riding left the pavement and turned over at least two times, three miles south of Elida, on Highway 70. Billy Martin and Bobby Boyde, both of Clovis were in the car with Young at the time of the accident, and escaped with only minor injuries, being dismissed from a Portales hospital at noon Sunday. Both of them sustained head injuries.
Highway Patrolman Jimmie Clark of Clovis, who investigated the accident, gave it his opinion that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed, when the driver apparently lost control of the machine.
Clark said that the car, a 1941 Pontiac, skidded 210 feet along the north side of the highway, then changed directions and skidded 108 feet diagonally across the pavement to the dirt on the other side of the road. Skidding 50 feet in the dirt the vehicle finally turned over two times and came to a rest. Young was thrown clear and his body was 54 feet from where the car finally came to a halt.
Calvin Young, brother of the victim, in an interview, said that he was not with his brother at the time he met his death, but added that the car belonged to Martin and he was of the opinion that Boyde was driving at the time of the wreck. Neither Boyde nor Martin were thrown out of the car. It was his belief that his brother was crushed beneath the car when the machine turned over on him as it tumbled into the barrow pit.
The father of the lad expressed remarks that the boy's head was crushed, his left shoulder and chest crushed, and it was possible he sustained a broken neck.
Young had been working on a farm southwest of Elida and his brother expressed the belief that he was being taken to the farm when the accident occurred. He said that in his opinion, the driver approached the "turn-off" on the highway before he realized it, and "applied his brakes too quick".
The deceased is the youngest son of Mr. and Mr. J. H. Young, and came here with his family from Olney, Texas, in 1928. He enlisted in the Navy on March 4, 1944, and was granted a medical discharge 42 days later, returning here from the West Coast.
Besides his parents, he is survived by one brother, Calvin, 21; a grandfather, F. M. Young; and grandmother, Mrs. Ada Goldsmith, both of this city.
