Services Held Saturday At First Lutheran For Leo Halfmann

Leo Halfmann, a lifelong resident of the Stephen community, died Tuesday, March 23, at a Mesa, Arizona, hospital at the age of 66. Funeral services were conducted from First Lutheran Church at Stephen on Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Howard Wagner officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Marion Erlandson, and musical numbers included "How Great Thou Art" sung by Mrs. Jean Rusling, and "Cown Him With Many Crowns" by Kenneth Price.

Honorary casketbearers were Clarence Carlson, Mervin Anderson, Henry Hoper, A.B. Anderson and Earl Benson of Stephen; Hans Anderson of Karlstad; Willard Dahl of Phoenix, Arizona; Burt Walker and A.O. Hamnes of Mesa, Arizona. Active casketbearers were Clarence Peterson, Jr., John Field, Lynn Benson, Harvey Rud, and Gary Rood of Stephen and Larry Bogestad of Donaldson, Minnesota.

Funeral arrangements were by the Stennes-Hughes Funeral Home, and interment will be at the Stephen City Cemetery in the spring.
Military tribute was accorded the deceased by the drill team of the Stephen American Legion Post #390. An honor guard flanked the casket for one hour prior to the service and folllowing the committal formed an escort and presented a final hand salute to their comrade. The American flag which had draped the casket during the service was presented to Mrs. Halfmann. The presentation was made by Past Commander K.C. Kuznia in behalf of the United States government. The drill squad included Legionnaires K.C. Kuznia, James Petersen, Curtis Larson, Wallace Knoll, Rolland Curry, and David Hangsleben.

Leo Hubert Halfmann was born April 14, 1914. He was the son of Henry and Rose Halfmann of Augsburg* Township. He attended rural schools and was a graduate of Stephen High School.[* Note--This is an error in the article. Henry & Rose Halfmann lived and farmed in Sinnott Township, not in Augsburg Township.]


Leo served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-1946. The last fifteen months were spent in the Pacific Theatre of Operation. During his military tenure, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service ribbon, American Theatre ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific theatre ribbon, Philippine Liberation ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.

Leo Halfmann was married to Gladys Benson September 30, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following his honorable discharge from the army. they established their home in Stephen, and Leo re-entered the employ of Roy Benson and Son. In 1951, he became owner of the local Ford dealership and remained active in the business for 27 years. When he retired in 1978, his son Wayne succeeded him as owner-operator of the Ford franchise.

During the years of residence here, Leo was an integral part of the community and became identified with matters of interest relative to church, civic, and community affairs. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, serving on various boards and committees; he was a Past Commander of Stephen American Legion Post #390; Past President of Stephen Lions Club; Past President of Stephen Civic and Commerce Association; and he served as a member of the Stephen Volunteer Fire department for several years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Wayne of Stephen and Bruce of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; his mother, Rose Halfmann of San Mateo, California; a sister, Mrs. Al (Irene) Egerman, also of San Mateo; and a brother, Paul, of Stephen.
Leo Halfmann and his wife, Gladys, have spent the past several winters in their home at Mesa, Arizona, but his heart belonged to Stephen. He loved the town and its people.

Out-of-town relatives attending the last rites were Mrs. Al Egerman, San Mateo, California; Mrs. Robert Oligney, Juneau, Alaska; Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Benson and Stacy, Crookston, Minnesota; Mrs. Robert Knoll, Apple Valley, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Orin Kruse, West Fargo, North Dakota; and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Erickson and Beth, Sandstone, Minnesota.
