Maxine Hurd of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the Hospitality House. Born on December 11, 1914, in Monroe County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Cora (Whitworth) Chamberlain. She married Robert O. Hurd in 1936, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Sari Wood of Bedford, IN; two sons, Thomas O. Hurd of Northville, MI, and David W. Hurd of Wilmington, NC; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, and two sisters.

She and her husband moved to Bedford in 1946, where she owned and operated the Jane Ann Hat Shop, the Vanity Shop, and the Art Studio in the Masonic Temple. She was a founding member of the Mother's Auxiliary of the Bedford Boys Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Boys Club for more than 30 years. She was a local artist and an active member of the Lawrence County Art Association. She was instrumental in saving and preserving the Clara Barton Red Cross log cabin. She served on the Bedford City Council for 20 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She donated her body to the Indiana University Medical Center.
