BENJAMIN WILLIAM HEPENSTALL

Benjamin William Hepenstall, son of John A. and Rachel Farrell Hepenstall, was born in Cedar county, Iowa, Oct. 31, 1860 and passed from this life at the home of his daughter in Russell, Feb. 16, 1957, at the age of 96 years, 3 months and 16 days.

When 10 years of age he came with his parents to a farm in Wayne county. Shortly after, his father died, and he remained on the farm with mother helping care for the farm and the younger children in the home.

On Feb. 19, 1894, he was united in marrigae to Delia White. The new home was established on an adjoining farm where they lived until moving to Russell in 1897. He engaged in the livery business for many years, then later helped his brother John in the grocery store.

One daughter, Lucy, was born to this union. Through the years they shared their home with several nieces and nephews whom they cared for as members of the family.

Besides the daughter, Mrs. Lucy Stacy, with whom he had made his home for many years, he leaves to mourn his passing, his son-in-law, Fred Stacy; 3 grandchildren, Mrs. Ursal Collins and Carl Morford, of Russell and Verle Morford of Stockton, Iowa; 7 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ella Lee of Long Beach, Calif.; also a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1930; by three sisters and one brother; and by two great grandchildren, Patty and Fred Alan Morford.

"Ben," as he was known by all, was one of the older residents of Russell, His hobby was gardening, which he greatly enjoyed, and he was also a great reader. During the closing years of his long life, as the frailties of age came upon him, he was tenderly cared for in the Stacy home, and was always patient and uncomplaining toward those around him.

Funeral services were held at the Woodman Funeral Home, Monday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. A. E. Beals. Interment was in the Russell cemetery.
