Mrs. H. P. “Grandmother” Jensen, who was 84 on June 15th, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. V. J. Juhl of Danevang, last Saturday and was buried Sunday afternoon in the Danevang cemetery.
A resident of Wharton County for 45 years, and a pioneer in the Danevang community of the last century. Mrs Jensen is survived by 29 descendants, most of whom live in this county.
Her husband, the late H. J. Jensen, was the first mail carrier from El campo to the Danevang post office, and was widely known throughout this section.
Mrs. Jensen was born in South Jutland, Denmark, June 15th, 1859, coming to this country when a young girl. The invasion of Denmark by the German army three years ago recalled to Grandmother Jensen and experience of her girlhood during the German invasion of Denmark in the “sixties”: Her parents were away from the house and they had cautioned her if the invading hordes approached the home to offer the soldiers bread, since after the fashion of all soldiers in the field, they would probably be extremely hungry. She recalled that she did serve them bread and butter, the only available food in quantity and they left contented harming neither her for the house and farm.
Mrs. Jensen emigrated to Cedar Falls, Iowa in May, 1879 and November of the same year married the late Hans Peter Jensen to whom 10 children were born, three of whom preceded her in death. They came to Danevang in 1893. Mr. Jensen died in 1931.
Mrs. Jensen and her husband took a lifelong and active interest in church affairs. Even during her advanced age, when the years began taking toll of her strength, she rarely missed as service. She will be missed not only to her relatives but her many friends.
Brief rites were held Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock from the Juhl home with Rev. Vagn Duus, pastor of the Ansgar Lutheran church officiating. This was followed by services in the church, after which she was laid to rest beside her husband.
Mrs. Jensen was survived by five sons and two daughters, 15 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The sons include: George Jensen of Los Angeles, Calif., J. S., V. P., Harold F. and Theo. Jensen of El campo, Mrs. A. P. Lauritsen and Mrs. V. J. Juhl of Danevang are the daughters.
