James was the third of fourteen children born to Jesse and Nancy Pendleton (Boatright) Fry. He married Sallie Jane Yokley in 1871 and they had three children: Samuel Jesse, Effie Laura and James Yokley.

Lynnville, Tenn., Nov. 18.--(Special.)--Sam Smith received a telegram Thursday announcing the death of Capt. James P. Fry, at the home of his son, Jim Fry, at New Orleans. Capt. Fry was born and reared here and is about seventy-three years of age. The remains will be sent here for burial, tomorrow morning. Capt. Fry has a large connection here among them a brother, L. L. Fry, and a sister, Mrs. M. L. Clark. He was well and favorably known throughout the state, having been in public office for a number of years. His last employment was with the revenue service under Collector E. B. Craig. Owing to ill health Capt. Fry resigned his place a year ago, going to live with his children in New Orleans.
