Family Bible records indicate his name was actually Marsena Franklin Julian, though he went by "M. F." or "Frank". He was 13th and last child of Rev. George (#18109478) and Mourning Smith Julian. Born on a farm near Tyner, Tennessee on land later taken for the Volunteer Ordnance Works, he grew up on Candy's Creek northwest of Cleveland TN.

He attended East Tennessee Wesleyan University in Athens, Tennessee, and on November 14, 1888 he married Louise Alice Hawk of McDonald, Tennessee. They tried farming in Texas, but weather conditions forced them to give up and return to Tennessee. They lived briefly in Chattanooga, then moved into his parents' home in Cleveland, Tennessee to care for them. M. F. became a carpenter in the Cleveland [Milne] Chair Factory until his retirement in poor health. Their two sons were Ernest, a pharmacist, and Glenn Hyder Julian (#43949863) an auditor.
