ALPHONSO ASHBA
Alphonso Ashba, son of Thomas W. and Jane Ashba, was born October 3, 1876, in Cedar township, Lucas county, Iowa, and passed from this life at Russell, Iowa, September 6, 1943, at the age of 66 years, 11 months and 3 days.
Almost his entire life was spent in or near Russell. He was educated in the Russell public schools, being a member of the first class graduating in 1895. Later he attended the Capital City Commercial college in Des Moines.
As a young man he worked with his father in the blacksmith shop, then for several years he was employed by the Burlington Railroad on the section, and in more recent years he did carpenter work.
On October 23, 1904, he was married to Ada Kenton and the new home was established in Russell where all of their married life was spent, with the exception of a few months residence in Kansas.
To this union six children were born, one of whom, Velma Madge, died at the age of 2 years. The surviving children are William Olen Ashba, instructor in the Naval Air Station, Norman, Okla.; Lt. Martin Alphonso Ashba, of New London, Conn.; Mrs. Nita Ruth Porter and Mary Isabelle Ashba, of Des Moines; and Keith Eugene Ashba, Machinist Mate 2nd class, San Francisco, Calif.
Besides the beloved companion and children, he leaves to mourn his passing a grandson, Michael Edward Porter; one brother, Abram Ashba, of Ottumwa; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Corthan, of Buena Vista, Colo.; and Mrs. Pearl Goltry, of Russell, also several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, his parents, fours sisters and two brothers.
Fon, as he was familiarly known, had a host of friends, and was respected throughout the community as one who was honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow men. He was a loving husband and father and will be sorely missed in the family circle and in the community.
Funeral services were held at the Russell Baptist church on Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals. Interment was in the Russell cemetery.
