Mary Jewell was born 1 May 1923 to John Joseph Oscar Hollingsworth and Willie Wardlaw Hollingsworth in Anniston, Alabama. Mary Jewell grew up with seven other children, being one of three girls. For some time up into her high school years she attended Anniston City Schools, but did not graduate.

At the young age of eighteen, on 20 December 1940 she married George Henry Deason. George being nine years older than, quickly fell in love. They were always with one another, smiling and laughing. When World War II broke out, George wrote to her, sending her love and promises of tomorrow. George even ran into Mary Jewell's brother in France!

After George's return from serving his country, they made their home at Anniston, Alabama and had their first of two children in 1946. Mary Jewell was employed at Anniston Memorial Hospital as an office secretary. There she discovered her rare blood type and was often asked to donate blood.

In the summer of 1952, Mary Jewell was diagnosed with Leukemia and passed away two weeks later. She left behind a husband, young daughter, infant son, parents, and a host of siblings. She will always be remembered for her sense of humor, smile, and togetherness that she made at family gatherings.

She was laid to rest at Edgemont Cemetery in Anniston, Alabama.
