Sarah Viola Baker, 60, died Monday, May 4, 1992, at her home. Born in Horry County, she was a daughter of the late Leon and Alma Grainger Goff.
Mrs. Baker attended Bethel Baptist Church. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of Sumter Chapter No. 188 Order of the Eastern Star and was currently the assistant district deputy of the 17th District Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Baker was retired from Pioneer Ltd.
She was first married to the late Dalton Shelley.
Survivors include her husband, C. O'Neal Baker; a son, Dennis Shelley of Laurinburg, N.C.; a daughter, Juanita Avin of Sumter; a stepson, Robin Baker of Gallivants Ferry; two brothers, Eugene Goff of Red Springs, N.C., and John Goff of Fayetteville , N.C.; and a sister, Joyce Y. Tompkins of Sumter. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Carol A. Sims, Bryan Avin and Emily Avin, all of Sumter.
A brother, Edward Goff, preceded Mrs. Baker in death.
Eastern Star Rites will be held at 6 tonight at Elmore-Hill Funeral Home, with visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m. Services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Revs. Gary Romines and Verdie Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe Summerall,Jr., Bryan Avin, Charles Pugh, James Mays, Sam Ramey, and Pat Barnhill. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of Horace W. Tompkins, 4535 Frisco Branch Road. Memorials may be made to the Eastern Star Home, 1267 N. Main St., Sumter, S.C. 29153. Elmore-Hill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
