MADISON - Lorenz A. "Larry" Leifer, age 89, died peacefully at home with his family at his side on Tuesday, October 13, 1999, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born on November 9, 1910 in Plymouth, Wisconsin, to Otto and Caroline (Friedrich) Leifer. In 1929 Larry moved to Madison to attend the University of Wisconsin. He graduated in 1933 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then started working at the Gisholt Machine Company, working there in various engineering positions until they closed in 1971. In 1935 Larry married Dorothea Westphal, of Reedsburg. They had two children, Richard and Timothy. Mrs. Leifer died March 25, 1948. In 1949, Larry married Marion Perschbacher of Wauwatosa. They had one daughter, Nancy. As a graduate of the UW class of 1933, Larry served on the committee and as chairman of the many class reunions. Larry was active in professional, religious and civic activities. He served on the national board and as local president of the ASTE. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he co-founded the Immanuel Foundation and served as secretary of the Foundation for many years. He was also on the building committee for the present Immanuel church building. Larry was active in Boy Scouts and served on the Four Lakes Council. He received the Silver Beaver Award for his service as the Chairman of the Camping and Activities for the Four Lakes Council responsible for the acquisition and development of Camp Castle Rock. A member of Maple Bluff Country Club and past president of both the Madison Curling Club and the state curling association. Larry was also known as a competitor. In 1982 he was a member of the United States Curling Association team that championed an American victory over Scotland and brought the Herries Maxwell Cup to the USA. Larry was a longtime member of the Downtown Madison Kiwanis Club. In addition to his wife Dorothea, Larry was peceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leland and Norbert; and sister, Clara (Robert) Zelm. He is survived by his wife, Marion; son, Richard "Skip" (Carol Turner) Leifer; granddaughter, Lynn (Robert) Myers; and great-granddaughter, Robyn Myers all of Granada Hills, California; grandson Timothy (Letty Chavez)Leifer of Pasadena, California; son, Timothy (Bonnie Hoffman) Leifer; granddaughter, Tiffany Leifer; and grandson, Todd Leifer all of Florence, Montana; daughter, Nancy Leifer; and granddaughter Terra Leifer of Missoula, Montana. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews; and grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral services will be held at IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1021 Spaight St., at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 1999. The Rev. David Susan will officiate. Burial will be at the Forest Hills Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on the day of the service from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. The family thanks Hospice for the loving care they gave to Larry and the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Immanuel Foundation, 1021 Spaight St., Madison, WI 53703, or Hospice, 2802 Coho St., #100, Madison, WI 53713. THE RYAN FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of rightousness, which the Lord, the rightous Judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me; but also to all who have longed for his appearing."
