Newton Barrow was born December 4, 1829, in Bradley, Jackson County, Illinois, the son of John Barrow and Mary Steele Barrow. On November 12, 1857, he married Ellen C. Brown (October, 1839-December 10, 1917), the daughter of Samuel Brown and Mary Ann Ireland. They were married in Campbell Hill, Illinois, and had six children:

1. Mary E. Barrow, born October, 1858, died sometime after 1900
2. Emma C. Barrow, born in 1861, died September 10, 1944
3. Ella Barrow, born 1863, died 1870
4. Thomas E. Barrow, born June 30, 1868, died May 21, 1906
5. Charles C. Barrow, born August 28, 1874, died April 14, 1949
6. Walter Lyman Barrow, born April 6, 1877, died December 27, 1954

Newton Barrow died June 20, 1896, in Bradley Township, Jackson County, Illinois. While there is no known grave marker for Newton, several members of the family testify that Newton was the last person to be buried in the Barrow Cemetery.
