Friends may join the family for a time of visitation from 7-9 tonight at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Second Christian Reformed Church in Lynden with Revs. Bruce Hemple and Ed Boer officiating. Private burial will be at Monumenta Cemetery in Lynden.
He was born July 22, 1906 in Amsterdam, Montana to John and Helen (VanderSchaaf) Verwolf. He attended Grundy Academy, Grundy College, Calvin College and Calvin Seminary, from which he graduated in 1932.
He served in Presbyterian churches in Durham, Nova Scotia and Summerside, Prince Edward Island. He continued as a Christian Reformed Church pastor in Milwaukee, Wis., Des Moines, Iowa, Sumas, Evergreen Park, Ill., Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Fairbanks and Anchorage in Alaska before retiring in Lynden in 1972.
Rev. Verwolf became involved in Kiwanis International clubs in Rock Rapids, Iowa and Lynden, where he served as a lieutenant governor in 1979-80. He enjoyed volunteering at the Lynden Senior Center, serving for several years as treasurer of its board and later for six years as board president.
Rev. Verwolf was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church, where he served as calling pastor for a time.
He was named the Lynden Tribune's "North Whatcom County Man of the Year" in 1987, and received a Leadership Recognition Award in 1991 from the Whatcom County Agency for Senior Citizens.
