John C Ostrander was born in Genesee County, New York in 1816, the son of Solomon and Ruth (Childs) Ostrander. He moved to Michigan along with his parents and siblings sometime prior to 1830, when the census finds them in Lenawee County.

By 1840 he had married his first wife Ann and settled in St Clair, Michigan, where he worked as a farmer. He and Ann had at least six children together before she passed away in 1856.

John then married Ursula "Sarah" Green on September 20, 1857. They moved to the Midland area and three children were born of their marriage.

The attached biographical sketch was published in 1884, just one year before John's death. It appears to be largely factual, however no records have been found regarding the mysterious son Edward J who was apparently deceased sometime prior to 1884.

The son "John E" who is mentioned in the sketch appears to be the son commonly known as Edward who passed away in 1933.

The final resting place of John's daughter Izza Mariah Ostrander has not been located. Izza married Richard Redfield in 1868.
