Lunetta was born to Robert Denton Divelbiss and Angeline "Shorthill" Divelbiss. She was the seventh child out of nine children, Isaac, Roy, George, May, Robert, Iona, Nellie, and Edna.

Nettie came from a line of coal miners. One of her grandfather's David R Shorthilll, was a coal-miner turned gold-miner. (David's history can be found in Livingston Montana). He was one of three gold-strikers to hit gold in Emigrant Gulch, Montana, in paying quantities.

Nettie's father, Robert Divelbiss was a carpenter, who built company housing for the coal mines in Horatio.
Nettie had lost her mother in 1900 when she was only 6 years old.
Nettie drowned at the age of 10 trying to retrieve a package that fell into a river, after it had flooded from a big storm.
