Nettie came from a line of coal miners. One of her grandfather's David R Shorthilll, was a coal-miner turned gold-miner. (David's history can be found in Livingston Montana). He was one of three gold-strikers to hit gold in Emigrant Gulch, Montana, in paying quantities.
Nettie's father, Robert Divelbiss was a carpenter, who built company housing for the coal mines in Horatio.
Nettie had lost her mother in 1900 when she was only 6 years old.
Nettie drowned at the age of 10 trying to retrieve a package that fell into a river, after it had flooded from a big storm.
