He was born July 19, 1919 to Louis and Nellie (Peloquin) Nowak in Spooner, Wis.
Vince graduated from Duluth Cathedral High School, where he played football and was a member of the boxing team. He joined the CCC and worked in Grand Marais, Minn. Vince was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific theater as a radio operator. He was injured in a crash landing but continued to serve, attaining the rank of sergeant. After the war he went to the University of Minnesota on the GI bill. He then worked for the St. Louis County Highway Dept. for several years, before returning to school to complete his degree in Education. He taught Math and Science in Wrenshall, Minn. and Spooner, Wis. He was involved in youth sports for many years, and was instrumental in the construction of the 19th. Ave. baseball field. He coached many youth football and baseball teams. He loved poetry and won awards for his work. He and his wife were active members in the Duluth Mental Health Assn.
He was a member and longtime head usher at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, and he was a lifelong member of the VFW and the Disabled Veterans of America. In later life, Vince's hobbies were bowling, horseshoes, bocce and card games. Until recently, he and his brothers took part in the Senior Olympics in Duluth.
Vince was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Jane (Bawden) Nowak; and brothers, Gene, Paul, Leonard, and Francis.
He is survived by his daughters, Jane (Mark) Stonich and Susan (Terry) Ragsdale; his sons, James (Joy), Joseph, Daniel, and Robert; his brothers, Gerald, Joseph, John, and Larry; five grandsons, Matthew and Eli Stonich, Andrew, Nathan and Mark Nowak; two great-granddaughters; and a great-great-grandson.

VISITATION: 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Combined Duluth Honor Guard. Memorials to the Alzheimer's Association would be appreciated.
