Wellington Leader April 16, 1970 Samuel S. Coleman, farmer and rancher, living in the Swearingen community, died at 1:45 a.m. Friday, April 10 in St. Joseph's Hospital. He had been ill for several months. He was in failing health the last few years, but was active among his friends and carried on his ranching until eight months ago.

Mr. Coleman was 81 years of age. With his family, he had lived in the county since 1948, coming from Hall County. He was active in community affairs and in the Quail Baptist Church.

Mr. Coleman was born July 26, 1883 in Fentress County, Tennessee, the son of R. I. and Hester Neely Coleman. He came with his parents to Wise County at the age of 4. When he was a young man, the pioneer spirit pulled him and with his family he came further west, traveling in a covered wagon. They stopped at Vernon a few years, then settled in Hall county in 1916.

He was a deacon in the Baptist Church, of which he became a member early in life. He was also a Sunday School superintendent and teacher in all communities where he lived.

Mr. Coleman encouraged the education of his own children and the children of the community, and he was active in all community and civic affairs.

He was married to Miss Hattie White November 13, 1912 at Vernon.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Hattie Coleman; three daughters, Mrs. Opal Tracy and Mrs. Howard Jones of Wellington, and Mrs. Harvey Jones of Clarendon; and three grandchildren who are Sammy, J. Lynn and Judy Jones.
