Melva was born in Osceola Township, near Houghton, Michigan, to Alfred and Emily Jane Moyle. She was the middle of five children and the oldest daughter. Her older brothers were Clarence and Alvin; her younger sisters were Ethel and Isabell.
On January 11, 1919, Melva married Frederick "Fred" Jobe, an immigrant from Cornwall like her mother. Together, they had one daughter. Fred preceded her in death in 1956 and she married again, this time to Walter Harvey. Walter died in 1981. Melva survived him by six years and died at the respectable age of 87.
She was a small but spirited woman and hardly docile. Family stories hold that when Melva was the victim of an attempted purse snatching, she sent the thief running by fighting back.
