DEATH OF JOHN SUMNER. HE PASSED AWAY AT GALESBURG YESTERDAY AGED 80 YEARS. Mr. John Sumner, this well known and venerable resident of Galesburg, died at his home in that village at 2 o'clock Monday morning, aged 80 years. He had been confined to the house but about 10 days. He was born at Norristown, Vt., April 10, 1810. He lived there during his boyhood days and then moved to Franklin county, N. Y., where he lived until 1893. He then moved to Richland in this county, which with this city and Galesburg, has been his home, over 47 years. Mr. Sumner was a farmer and shoemaker carrying on the shoe business in this place from 1840 to 1855, a quiet man, a kind husband and father, also making his mark for more than a quarter of a century in this county as a music teacher, singer and player upon the bass viol. Mr. Sumner married Miss Philena Davenport at Malone, N. Y., in 1836, and she survives him with four sons and two daughters. The children are Hon. D.HI. Sumner of Waukesha, Wis., ex-member of congress, William and Charles Sumner of White Cloud, Mrs. S. A. Loveland of Galesburg, Mrs. Chas, B. Ford and Col. John D. Sumner of this city. The funeral occurred at Galesburg, Tuesday afternoon, and the burial at Richland, where two sons are buried. Kalamazoo Gazette Nov. 14, 1890 page 5
