He was reared and received his education in Goldman, where he attended Goldman Schools. Mr. Helms was a Merchant Marine before joining the United States Navy and serving during World War II, surviving Pearl Harbor. He married Mary Ethel Murrow on Nov. 14, 1952, in Malvern.
Mr. Helms worked for the former Bitimonous Company in Pine Bluff as an asphalt spreader before going to work for the City of White Hall, from which he retired. He was a member of New Beginnings Baptist Church.
Mr. Helms is survived by his wife, Mary Murrow Helms of Pine Bluff; three sons, David Helms of Pine Bluff, Michael Helms of Stuttgart, and Fred Helms of Hazen; five daughters, Annette Bridges of White Hall, Paula Ludlam of Pine Bluff, Grace Hankins of England, Patricia Stanley of Stuttgart, and Linnea Sisco of Texas; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randy Helms; a grandson, Jamie Helms; seven brothers and two sisters.
The family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, 2 to 4 p.m. at Robinson's. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson with Reverend Charles Cantwell officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock.
