John Gay came to Graham with his parents, brother, and sister as an infant. He graduated from Graham High School, attended Baylor University, and then went to Poughkeepsie, New York where he studied in a business college received a degree in bookkeeping. John Gay was a well known resident of Young County and member of a pioneer family. The Gay family settled near Graham, Texas later moving into the city.
For a time, John Gay owned a general store, where he sold school books until Texas passed the "free education" bill. He was a bookkeeper for a number of years. Later in life, he spent his time ranching.
