John was a farmer, a minister of the Gospel, (many records list him as Rev. John Shockey) and a school teacher. In a booklet "Discourses Given Before the Allen County Historical Society," it states: "It was the policy of the school officials of Auglaize Township to employ the best possible talent. John Shockey was the first teacher conducting a special school during the winter of 1833-1834, in a log cabin, on Section 36."
