Hazel Wells Harrell, 79, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at her home in Rocky Mount. She was born December 9, 1922, daughter to the late Asa Garfield and Hattie Jones Wells. Hazel was an Emeritus member of the Rocky Mount Luncheon Pilot Club, former president of the Rocky Mount Business & Professional Women's Club, and former state chair of the BPW Foundation for numerous years. The BPW established an annual Hazel Wells Harrell Nursing Scholarship in her honor at Nash Community College. She enjoyed traveling and flowers. She was employed by Farm Journal, Inc. for 30 years. She managed a local office for many of those years employing a staff of approximately 35. Hazel was an exceptional businesswoman, as well as a kind and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who was deeply loved. She was preceded in death by a son, Dale Carson Harrell, who died of leukemia at age 14.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Herman R. Harrell; one daughter, Mary Anne Etheridge and husband, Spencer H., of Tarboro; one son, Robert B. "Bert" Harrell and wife, Janice L., of Lake Wylie, SC; one sister, Pearl Wells Sullivan of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Amy Etheridge Hasick and husband, Jeffrey T. "Jeff', of Garner, Frank E. Etheridge and wife, Michelle B., of Rocky Mount; and Robert B. "Rob" Harrell Jr. of Lake Wylie, SC; and one great granddaughter, Taylor Wells Hasick of Garner.
