Vernon Stevens, son of William Orin Stevens and Martha Rice Stevens, was born near Exline, IA, 22 Nov 1927, and passed away 11 Jul 1967, in the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, at the age of 59 years, seven months and19 days. He had been in failing health for several months and had been hospitalized since May 1. His father preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Paul Edward with the Air Force, stationed in England, three grandchildren, Craig, Vonrene and Violene Stevens, his mother and three sisters, Mrs. Glen Gladfelder and Mrs. Audrey Gladfelder, both of Centerville and Mrs. Larry Maitland of Rockford, IL and other relatives and friends. Vernon was a Veteran of WWII, having served from May 1942 to Sep 1945. Over two and a half years of this time was spent overseas with the Fifth Army in European, African and Middle East theaters of war. He was given a citation for outstanding performance of duty while serving with the 101st Military Police Battalion. After separation from the Army, he worked as a mechanic. At the time of his passing, he was an employee of Handler Motor of Davenport, where he had several years. Funeral services were conducted 14 Jul 1967, from Miller Wehle Funeral Home in Centerville, with Rev Kermit Gladfelder in charge. Burial will be in Exline Cemetery.
