Obituary: THOMPSON, LILLIE BELLE CARTER, 92, who was "as old as her tongue and a little bit older than her teeth" as she would say, died peacefully in her sleep late Saturday afternoon, December 2. Lille Belle lived a full and active life filled with family and community. She supported her husband of 65 years, Milton E. Thompson, Sr., former Dade County Commissioner, City of Hialeah Councilman and founder of Thompson and Sons Roofing Contractor. Lillie Belle Carter was born in Hastings, FL. She married Milt in 1931 and soon moved to Hialeah, where they raised three children. They were founding members of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Hialeah, and Lilly became a lifelong member of the Hialeah Woman's Club in 1950. For years she worked with her husband as he began his roofing business, handling all of the office duties. She was also instrumental in his success as a city and county politician. Community involvement was equally important to Lillie. She was actively involved with the PTA, the March of Dimes and the Woman's Club of Hialeah. In addition, she was an avid and master bridge player. In the 1960's Lillie and Milt purchased a getaway home on Lake Istapoga in Lorida, FL. The began taking weekend jaunts to "the lake" with their six grandchildren and retired there in the early 1970's. The grandchildren will always cherish the memories of perfect summers with Nanie and Papa. For years they left for the lake the day after school ended and did not return home again until school started. It was Nanie who orchestrated the fun that never ended: fishing, waterskiing, riding bikes, horses and motorcycles, and camping trips to visit relatives throughout Florida and Georgia. After Milton died in 1997, Lillie returned to South Florida. She will always be remembered for her love of family, the guiding force in her life. She is the last of the nine Carter children to pass. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Annette Thompson Hopp, her husband, Milton E. Thompson, Sr. and her daughter-in- law, Ann Thompson. She leaves behind two sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday, December 6 at 1 P.M. at St. Margarets Epsicopal Church. There will also be a viewing 12:00 Noon til 1 P.M. Interment Southern Park. Arrangements by John Hanks Memorial Services, 305-885-1937. Published in The Miami Herald on 12/5/2006.
