served in the spanish american war and upon return went to panama as an explosives expert from 1908 to 1910 to help build the canal. he then worked for the geological survey in maine for a year before joining duponts gunpowder plant where he worked intil 1917. he koined the consular service and held the post of vice consul in dundee scotland from 1920 to 1922. when he returned he joined the veterans adminisration until retirement in 1942
