Joan Lewis, 83, died Sunday, March 28, 2010, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
She was born Aug. 4, 1926, in Sylvia, to George and Ellen Allison Schwein. A Ulysses resident since 1930, she was a cheerleader in high school and graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1944.

On Aug. 21, 1946, she married Ed Lewis at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses.

A homemaker, Mrs. Lewis was a 4-H leader, a charter member and active in the Junior Civic Club and was on the first board of directors for Western Prairie Care Home, serving for 12 years. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 79, First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women and was a Junior Choir teacher. She also collected plates, quilted and crocheted and enjoyed camping with her many friends and family.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Tim Lewis of Moscow; two daughters, Teri Higgs of Ulysses, and Allison Carpenter of Norman, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, June Flummerfelt of Rogers, Ark. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Clair, Keith, Rex and Gene; and a sister, Cleo Trent.

Funeral was at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses. Burial was at Ulysses Cemetery
