Rex L. Schwein, 92, Blue Springs, MO passed Friday, February 27, 2009 at home.

Rex was born August 15, 1916, on a farm near Sylvia, KS, the fourth of seven children of George and Ellen (Allison) Schwein. In 1930, the family moved to Ulysses, KS, where Rex graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1934. He was the only member of his family to earn a college degree, graduating with a Bachelors of Arts from Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1938. He married Margaret Reed on May 27, 1941, in Hays, KS. He taught at Stanton County Community High School in Johnson, KS, four years, then enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and served on Guam and Guadalcanal until 1945.

The family located in Atchison, KS, where he taught Spanish, and English, and later photography at Atchison Junior-Senior High for 36 years. He was cited in 1964 as Outstanding Teacher at the school and was honored in 1981 by the Atchison Daily Globe and the community as MO-KAN Man of the Year. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of Kansas and the Inter-American University, Saltillo, Mexico, and did post graduate study in Guadalajara, Mexico, at the University of Chicago, IL, at Washington University, St. Louis, MO, and the University of Arizona in Tucson. At Atchison Jr.-Sr. High he also directed youth in photography for the school newspaper and yearbooks for 20 years. He retired from teaching in 1981. As a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church, he sang in the choir for 35 years, and served many years as the church school literature secretary. He was a charter member of the Atchison Rivermen Community Chorus. He and his wife traveled widely, and they retired to Harlingen, TX, in 1988. He taught "Survival Spanish" and photography at his RV Park, sang in the Park's Chapel Choir and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Rex is survived by his wife Margaret of 68 years; daughters Karen Lee Killough of Manhattan, KS; Sue Grinlinton of Lake Tapawingo, MO; Kris Allen of Blue Springs, MO; and Jerry Andersen of Lee's Summit, MO; one son, Rick Schwein of Haddonfield, NJ; two sisters, June Flummerfelt of Rogers, AR and Joan Lewis of Ulysses, KS; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His parents, a sister, 3 brothers, a grandson and 4 nephews preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, 301 SW Woods Chapel Rd. Blue Springs, MO. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
