Cass City Enterprise - Cass City, Tuscola, MI
18 May 1899 - page 1
George Higgins, who died at his home in Elmwood on Tuesday, May 9th., was born in Kent County, England, in 1815, making him 84 years and 20 days of age at the time of his decease.
He emigrated to Canada, at the age of seventeen and was sixteen weeks crossing the Atlantic in a sailing vessel. In 1847 he was married to Miss Mary A. Watson. They came to Michigan in 1863. Their union was blessed with six daughters and two sons, all of whom are living - Mrs. Bell Clark, of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Jas. W. Higgins, of Bad Axe; Mrs. J. F. Hendrick, and Mrs. A. A. Wickware, of Cass City; Mrs. J. Anker, of La Lone, Minn.; Mrs. Elizabeth Ormsbee, of Tomahawk, Wis.; John Higgins, still at the homestead; and Mrs. Josephine McKonkey, of Elmwood.
Deceased was a member of the Methodist Church for over sixty-two years and the funeral service which was very largely attended, was held at the Cass City Methodist Church on Friday, Rev. E. Shepard, of Gagetown, having charge.
One of our best men has been taken from us but the good deeds which filled his life will continue to exert an influence for good for many years to come.
