George Washington Allard was born in Franklin County, New York, November 22, 1847 and on the 12th of September 1909, his spirit took its flight unto Him who gave it. Mr. Allard had reached the age of 61 years, 9 months, and 20 days. While just a boy he came with his parents to Davenport Iowa and in 1861 to Montgomery County, being one of the pioneers of the county.
He helped to break up much of the land around Grant, which was practically a prairie at that time. Afterward, he engaged in the mercantile business in Grant and lived in what is now the hotel which was built by his father. In 1866, he was married to Phoebe West, whose death occurred some years later. In 1884 he was united in marriage with Emma Reid. He was the father of fourteen children, eleven of whom are living.
His last few years were full of pain and suffering. He was a man of remarkable endurance and never murmured because of his afflictions.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, and children, an aged mother, two sisters and three brothers of whom he gave the assurance that he was at peace with God.
The funeral services were held in the Grant M. E. Church and were conducted by Rev. J. V. Knoll. Interment was in the Grant Cemetery.
