Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Reynolds enlisted in the Union Army on October 19, 1861 at the age of twenty-three with a high school education. He rose through the ranks of the 64th Illinois Infantry Regiment and the Yates Sharpshooters from second lieutenant to first lieutenant, captain, major, and lieutenant colonel. He fought in seventeen Civil War battles, was wounded three times, and took part in Sherman's March to the Sea. On July 11, 1865, he was breveted brigadier general "for gallant and meritorious services." Five days later, he was mustered out after four years of service. After the war, he received a law degree from the University of Chicago, was admitted to the bar, and practiced law in Chicago. In 1867, he was elected to the Illinois state house of representatives for a two year term and in 1872, he was elected to the Illinois state senate for a two year term. While in the state senate, he was a commissioner from Illinois to the Universal Exposition in Vienna in 1873. He also served as a commissioner to establish a state school for mentally handicapped children in 1874. After his wife died in 1890, he moved to southern California to take advantage of the mild climate. At the time of his death, he resided in Pasadena, California.
