"Ms. Oakley was born April 28, 1922 in Greene County. She was the daughter of the late William and Maggie Nichols Vandiford. She graduated from Maury High School in 1939. She spent much of her life working on the farm. She also worked in textile plants in Hookerton, Ayden, and Grifton prior to her retirement. She was a member of Elm Grove Free Will Baptist Church."
"She was preceded in death by three brothers: Raymond, Lester and Herman Vandiford and six sisters: Kathleen Wooten, Ruth Wainright, Jenny Braxton, Susan Skomski, Belle Oakley, and Margaret Drake. Ms. Oakley is survived, in addition to her husband, two sons, Mitchell Oakley and wife, Dottie, of Ayden and Danny Oakley of Grifton, a daughter, Jennie Lou Garris, and husband, James, of Ayden; and six grandchildren: Tammy (Charlie) Culberson of Greensboro, Jamie Cavanaugh of Hawaii, Kristie Oakley of Grifton, Karen Oakley of Greer, S.C., and Paul Oakley and Doug Garris, both of Ayden; and a sister, Rivers Horne of Ayden."
