"Margaret Lee Drake passed away peacefully in her sleep in the place she loved the most, her beautiful home on Vashon Island, Tuesday, June 1, 1999. Born to William and Maggie Vandiford on September 7th, 1927 near Maury, North Carolina in Greene County. Margaret was the last of 11 children in her family. Upon her graduation from high school at the age of 17, Margaret moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the F.B.I. Married to Major Charles (Jeff) Drake-USAF on March 15, 1951, they spent many wonderful years together raising a family and traveling throughout the United States and abroad. In June of 1964, they settled into their home on the north end of Vashon Island over looking the Puget Sound and the Olympic and Cascade Mountains. One of the greatest pleasures she enjoyed was working in the many gardens that surrounded her house. Despite the arthritis in her hands that weakened her during the last three years of her life, she always managed to spend a couple of hours working in and around her home. Margaret will be remembered for her kindness and loving dedication and devotion to her friends and family. During the 15 years she worked at the Bank of California, she developed many friendships which she cherished. Preceded in death by her husband in 1971, Margaret is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Drake of Los Angeles, CA., her son Michael Drake of Federal Way, WA.; sisters Rivers Horne and Christine Oakley of Ayden, N.C., and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Vashon Cemetery. Arrangements by Island Funeral Services."
