John was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and, after having worked on a farm his parents had in Washington County, Oregon, he worked for a tanner in Sellwood, then an unincorporated city South of Portland, Multnomah, Oregon (now a neighborhood in Portland). He joined the Sellwood Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter, becoming a full-time paid employee, a hoseman, in approximately 1908. In 1912, he became a hoseman on the first fireboat in Portland and he remained a fireboat hoseman until his retirement in 1933
