George William married Mary Louise Brooks on 21 Mar 1867 in Watertown, NY. They had eight children (Dora May, b. 28 Jan. 1868 (Canada)-9 Oct. 1951); Florence (1870-1942); Omega "Mae" (1872-1952); William "Willy" George (1874-1889); Matilda Pamela (1878-1953); Delia (1883-1946); Leonard Baldwin (1886-1943); George Francis "Frank" (1891-1971).

George W. Hilts a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army on 21 Aug. 1864 in Watertown, NY. At the time, he was residing in Manlius, a town in Onondaga County, east of the city of Syracuse, New York. He was 19 years old. He mustered in on 28 Sept. 1864. He was a Private with Co. K, 186 Regiment, NY Infantry. He was mustered out with the Company on 2 June 1865 near Alexandria, VA. At the time he entered into service, his occupation was listed as a farmer.

On his military records, he is described as being 5 ft. 5 in. tall with blue eyes, light hair and a fair complexion. (Military info and personal description from New York Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts, 1861-1900.)

He was employed as a Teamster in June 1865. He was employed as a carpenter between June 1875-June 1880.

He is found in the censuses between Jun 1875-Jun 1900 in Herkimer, Herkimer Co., New York.

George was employed as by the railroad in June 1900. Census Information: June 1900, was renting a house. He lived in Albany, New York (from a deposition given for his brother Andrew).

He was employed as a Policeman on the Herkimer police force in Feb 1892.

He and his wife & son reside in their daughter Dora's household in April 1910 on 72 Elizabeth Street, Utica, Oneida Co., NY.

His cause of death was from starvation after a gastro surgery.

George W. Hilts died at his home 1023 West street, Tuesday after an illness caused by an ulcer of the stomach. He was born in Herkimer 89 years ago and worked at the carpenter trade there until coming to this city 12 years ago where he was employed in the carpenter shops at the Savage Arms plant.

When he was 16 years old, he enlisted his service in the cause of the North, servicing 14 months and seeing action in the battle of Petersburg.

Besides his wife who was Louise Brooks of Mohawk, he leaves five daughters and two sons as follows: Mrs. John Hall of Utica [Dora]; Mrs. Florence Hamstead [George Hempstead] of Denver, Colorado; Mrs Omega Fletcher of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Orville House [Matilda Pamela] of Mohawk, Mrs. J.W. Roberts [Delia] of Rochester, Leonard B. Hilts and George Frank Hilts, both of Utica. And by two sisters and a brother: Mrs. Lucy Petrie of Herkimer, Mrs. Arthur Hall [Dora] of Utica and Andrew Hilts of Herkimer.
