L.C. Barnard Dies Friday At Winfield

Winfield, Kas.,- Lawrence Carleton Barnard, 94, known as the dean of Winfield businessmen, died at 4:10 a.m. Friday in Newton Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Labor Day when he was injured in a fall at his home.

A resident of Winfield since 1908, he was the principal stockholder of Kerr's, which he and D. L. Pontius bought from M.B. Kerr 51 years ago. He was active in the store, and on duty every day, until last summer. Mr. Barnard was known as a golf enthusiast and was still playing past his 90th birthday. Also a bicyclist, he rode daily until quite recently.

Mr. Barnard's son, Elliot Barnard, now of Kansas City, was a former Arkansas City resident, operating Barnard's Ready-To-Wear Women's store there.

L.C. Barnard was a member of the First Methodist church in Winfield, a charter member of the Winfield Rotary Club, a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Born in central Indiana, Aug. 9, 1865, he was the son of Sylvester Barnard and Lavina Meyer Barnard. He was married to Myrtle Nichols, April 27,1890, at Middleton, Ind., and they came to Winfield in 1908 from Muncie, Ind. Mr. and Mrs. Barnard celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary prior to her death Sept. 5, 1955.

Survivors include two sons, Elliot Barnard of Kansas City, and Boyd Barnard, Philadelphia; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Sunday 2:30 p.m. at the First Methodist church with the Rev. Everett Mitchell, local pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Highland cemetery beside his wife. The Swisher-Taylor Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Barnard will lie in state at his home, 502 E. 11th St., from Saturday noon until time for the services on Sunday.
