Husband of Laura A. (Newcomb) Close (1831-1874). They were married on November 19, 1848 in Gibson, Washington County, Indiana. Benjamin was the father of four girls and three boys with Laura including: William Reese, Matilda A., Sarah J., Susan Harriet, Mary M., Samuel Otto and George Sherman Close. Benjamin was the son of Rev. Samuel J. Close and Nancy Ann (Collier) Close. He was a Civil War Veteran in Co. F, 66th Indiana Infantry. He enlisted on August 19, 1862 and was mustered out on June 7, 1865. Benjamin died at age 40, two years after returning from fighting in the Civil War.

Benjamin and Laura were living in Vienna, Scott County, Indiana in 1860 and in 1862 when Benjamin enlisted in the Civil War. According to the estate sale notice in July of 1868, he and his wife were living in Jackson County, Indiana at the time of his death. There is some conflicting information about Benjamin's date of death. From the government headstone application, the date looks to be either March 1867 or March 1869, however, we know he died prior to August of 1868. Information I obtained from the Scott County, Indiana genealogy center had his death date listed as April of 1867. It is possible that this was the date of his will or probate. Because there have often been mistakes on the death dates in the Civil War headstone files, I do not know if his death was March or April of 1867, or if, in fact, he died in March or April of 1868. His wife had the estate sale (after his death) in August of 1868 and she filed for his CW pension in April of 1869. She moved to the Mercer County, Missouri area around this time as well.
